The gains in oil offset weakness in the banking and technology sectors. Intel, Hewlett-Packard, Dell and Microsoft declined on news of a weakening PC market. Nvidia and Texas Instruments outperform the sector and closed with gains, lifting the chip sector. In after-hours trade Google fell 5.5% after the company reported a 17% rise in earnings, but results missed analysts’ expectations. Implied volatility inched lower again.
