Tech bellwethers, including IBM, Apple and Adobe, managed to record small gains. Seagate jumped 7.2% in after-hours trading after encouraging Q3 earnings forecast.

Another flat finish
The market fell slightly after Japan was hit with another major earthquake and the price of oil rose above $110 a barrel.
